Reign Steal Win From Wranglers In Shootout, 5-4

Bud Holloway and Tim Kraus Net Shootout Winners

ONTARIO, Calif. – The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL Los Angeles Kings and AHL Manchester Monarchs, defeated the Las Vegas Wranglers in the shootout, 5-4, Saturday evening in front of 7,870 fans at Citizens Business Bank Arena.

Ontario opened up scoring in the match 52 seconds after the first puck drop.  Six seconds into a power play that came from a Wranglers’ interference minor, right wing Geoff Walker received a pass from right wing Mike Howe and threw a shot into the top shelf.  The power play goal gave the Reign an early 1-0 lead.

Las Vegas tied the game at 5:40. Wranglers center Tyler Mosienko carried the puck through the neutral zone and over the blue line before passing it to left wing Dan Riedel.  Riedel took a shot on goal, which was redirected into the net by defenseman Scott Owens.

Midway through the first period, the Reign regained the lead during a power play.  Center Tim Kraus passed the puck over to defenseman Shawn Germain.  Germain sent a slap shot towards the net that didn’t make it past Wranglers goaltender Matt Keetley and bounced back out into the play.  Defenseman P.J. Atherton picked up the rebound in front of the net and fired it into the empty side of the goal.  The Reign held their lead for the remainder of the first period.

The Wranglers got the equalizer at 5:35 during a power play.  Dan Riedel received a feed in front of the crease from Tyler Mosienko, who was coming around from behind the net.  Riedel launched the puck past Reign netminder Jeff Zatkoff.  With only 39 seconds remaining in the second period, Las Vegas took the lead.  Tyler Mosienko snapped the puck over to center Chris Neiszner from the bottom of the left face-off circle.  Neiszner chipped the puck into the right side of the net.  Center Chris Ferraro also registered an assist on the goal.  The clubs headed into the final period of play with the Reign looking for an equalizer.

Geoff Walker was streaking towards the net when a Wranglers player poked the puck away.  Walker regained possession of the puck behind the red line and sent it to left wing Chris Curran who was positioned in front of the net.  Curran buried the puck in the top shelf, and
tied the game, 3-3, at 4:41 in the third.

Las Vegas stole the lead again at 9:59 during a shorthanded session.  P.J. Atherton lost the puck and Zatkoff went down to keep it out of the net.  Tyler Mosienko picked up the loose puck directly in front of Zatkoff and threw it over the goaltender.

It looked like Geoff Walker was going to pick up his second goal of the game with 4:10 remaining in the third period, but the goal was waved off.  It was determined that Walker hit the puck into the net with his hand, and
Las Vegas held their 4-3 lead.

The Reign were n2-28 vs LV Win.jpgot content trailing the Wranglers.  At 17:22, center Tim Kraus wristed a shot into the top-shelf off an assist from defenseman Andrew Martens.  Neither team scored again for the rest of regulation, and the clubs headed into a sudden-death overtime  session to determine the winner.

Neither club found the back of the net in the overtime session, so the game went into a shootout.  Both Bud Holloway and Tim Kraus (Ontario’s 1st and 4th shooter) scored for the Reign and clinched the win, with a final score of Reign 5, Wranglers 4.
