There wasn't a dry eye at Citizens Business Bank Arena Saturday night when U.S. Army Colonel Francis Flynn was done speaking.

Flynn appeared via a taped message from Kuwait and encouraging his nephew, Jeff Corey of the Reign. To think an American solider, in harm's way, would take time to boost the morale of a hockey player back home tells you a thing or two about the character of our men and women in uniform.

"They are the true heroes of America," Dave Oldham, vice president for the Reign, said of the military.

It was part of the team's third military appreciation night and the most moving thus far. There were sailors in the arena about to head overseas on the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and troopers recently returned from Iraq.

Just as important, Col. Flynn also placed the winning bid on his nephew's red-white-and-blue jersey. According to Oldham, public address announcer Jeff Pope worked the post-game auction so well that 22 jerseys were sold for a total of just under $22,000.

The proceeds from the auction went to Stater Bros. Charities. The Reign will have five more such nights for other charities this season.

It's an outstanding accomplishment given the economic stress of our times. ...
