Ontario, CA – Forward Jonny Brodzinski scored his team-leading 18th goal of the season in the third period, but Ontario Reign (24-11-8-0) fell to the San Diego Gulls (25-13-2-2) 4-1 at Citizens Business Bank Arena Friday night.
The Reign generated multiple scoring chances in the first period, but Gulls netminder Jhonas Enroth (W, 26 saves on 27 shots) provided timely saves. With momentum built by their goaltender, the Gulls opened the scoring at 14:12 as forward Kyle MacKinnon knocked in a rebound off the pads of Reign backstop Jack Campbell (L, 34 saves on 37 shots).
In the second period, the physical play picked up between the two teams and boiled over when Gulls forward Ryan Garbutt boarded Reign winger Jonny Brodzinski. Veteran Brett Sutter stood up for Brodzinski by dropping the gloves with Garbutt, but received 17 minutes of penalties (Instigating, Fighting and a Misconduct).
Gulls defenseman Jacob Megna made it 2-0 midway through the third period ripping a shot under the blocker of Campbell at 8:32. The Reign cut the lead in half with a late power-play tally from Brodzinski at 14:31, but the momentum swept back over to the Gulls when former Reign forward Jordan Samuels-Thomas blasted in his eighth goal of the season at 17:35. Garbutt sealed the victory for the Gulls with an empty-net goal at 19:39.
The Reign finished the game 1-for-1 on the power play while the Gulls went 0-for-2.
