Tucson, AZ – Goaltender Jack Campbell made 35 saves and forward Teddy Purcell scored the game-winning goal in his Reign debut to send the Ontario Reign (9-5-4-0) over the Tucson Roadrunners (9-5-3-0) 3-2 in overtime at Tucson Arena Wednesday evening.
The Reign kicked off the scoring midway through the opening period and defenseman Kurtis MacDermid floated in a shot from the blue line and past the blocker of Roadrunner netminder Marek Langhamer (33 saves on 36 shots) at 10:27. Forward Mike Amadio picked up the lone assist. Forward Justin Auger made it 2-0 at 17:23 after cutting around the defense to rip a shot over Langhamer’s glove from the left-wing circle. Defenseman Vincent LoVerde and forward T.J. Hensick added assists.
In the second period, the penalty kill and stellar goaltending from Campbell were on display for the Reign. The Reign held the Roadrunners to 0-for-2 in the frame and Campbell provided highlight-reel stops.
The Roadrunners fought back in the third period as forward Laurent Dauphin stole the puck from forward Michael Mersch in the neutral zone to score a shorthanded breakaway goal at 5:46. Roadrunners defenseman Dakota Mermis reset the contest at 15:18 burying a rebound past Campbell.
In the extra skate, the Roadrunners pressured early, but Purcell broke free in the neutral zone and lifted a backhanded shot past the blocker of Langhamer for the game-winner.
