Reign defenseman Kevin Gravel scored the game-winning goal at 1:16 of overtime to help the Ontario Reign (15-4-2-0) skate past the San Jose Barracuda (9-9-1-3), 2-1, at Citizens Business Bank Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Netminder Peter Budaj picked up his 14th win of the season with 19 saves.
Ontario opened the game with quality scoring chances early in the first period, but San Jose netminder Aaron Dell was there to keep the Reign off the scoreboard. The Barracuda broke the scoreless tie at 19:29 when forward Trevor Parkes scored on a redirection, tipping in a shot by defenseman Mark Cundari.
In a scoreless middle frame, Budaj came up big for Ontario, making seven saves, while Dell stopped six.
Ontario broke open the third period energized, pressing early and finally found the back of the net when forward Justin Auger tipped home forward Sean Backman’s shot at 18:59 to make it 1-1. With the assist, Backman now extends his point lead to a team-high 19 points (5-14=19).
The game remained at one apiece until 1:16 of overtime when Gravel netted the game-winner, slipping the puck in between the legs of Dell for the victory.
Dell finished with 23 saves in the loss.
