Ontario, CA – The Ontario Reign, proud American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League (NHL), are proud to announce that defenseman Vincent LoVerde has been named the team’s winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Ontario community during the 2016-17 season.
Currently in his second season as team captain with the Reign and third year of pro hockey in the Inland Empire, LoVerde has embraced the leadership role in every facet. He strives to set an example for the younger players on the ice and also understands the vision of the Ontario Reign and Hope Reigns Foundation community relations efforts. The Chicago, Illinois, native participated in all ten of our jersey auctions to benefit various local nonprofit organizations and volunteered for all community functions.
Last fall, the Reign, including LoVerde, visited Danbury School, a local school in the Inland Empire for children with disabilities. He eagerly read to the children and played games all afternoon. In December Vincent was among many of our players who visited Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital to play with young patients receiving treatment and took time to sit down with one five-year-old girl, and spend the afternoon coloring and getting to know her.
Last month, the Reign were honored to host Isaac, a six-year-old boy with a rare form of cancer, at a game. Isaac and his family were treated to a special night that included a visit from Kingston, the Reign mascot, and a tour of the Reign locker room. Even though LoVerde was injured at the time, after hearing Isaac’s story, he wanted to meet him and watch part of the game with him, exemplifying true leadership and understanding of the importance of caring for our community.
LoVerde is now one of 30 finalists for the AHL’s 2016-17 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced by the American Hockey League at a later date.
