Ontario, CA – Forward Teddy Purcell recorded a two-point performance to lead the Ontario Reign (22-9-6-0) past the Bakersfield Condors (15-16-4-1) 3-2 on Wednesday night at Citizens Business Bank Arena.
Forward Jonny Brodzinski, who scored the game-winning goal in the third period, said the team recognized, especially late in the second period, that they were going to “close it out” to get the win.
“I felt like the first two periods we didn’t really play our game,” Brodzinski said. “We had a lot of penalties right away and they’re a really good team on the power play so we kind of strayed away from that at the end of the second period and into the third we played our game. We really took it to them.”
In the end, the Reign accomplished that thanks in large part to the two-point performance from Purcell. The veteran tallied a goal and grabbed the assist on the Brodzinski marker.
The Condors opened the starting period, persistent in offensive zone and took an early lead scoring off a faceoff. Defenseman Mark Fayne banged in a shot over the head of netminder Jack Campbell at 6:37 unassisted. Less than 60 seconds later, forward Adrian Kempe created a rebound chance for forward Andrew Crescenzi who buried it past netminder Jonas Gustavsson. A little later in the period, forward Taylor Beck put the Condors up front, burying his 12th goal of the season at 11:37.
The penalty-stricken middle frame started with a lot of back and forth scoring opportunities between the two teams. Ontario tied the score at 6:28 when Purcell knocked in his sixth goal of the season on a nifty feed from forward Mike Amadio.
Brodzinski felt power plays are an area to improve on.
“Tonight we weren’t great [on the power play]. We didn’t get a lot of break ins and poor possession was another big thing on the power play today, but obviously the goal that we scored was a good break in.”
The Reign took a 3-2 lead at 9:23 after forward Brett Sutter drew a penalty on Bakersfield. Purcell faked a shot, then fired a long feed and Brodzinski tipped in his team-leading 14th goal of the season, and fourth goal in the last three games. The Condors searched for the tying tally, and eventually pulled Gustavsson with a minute to go, but came up short.
Campbell earned the win in his 22nd consecutive start with 24 saves and improves to 4-0-1 against Bakersfield this season. Gustavsson recorded 30 stops in the loss.
