San Diego, CA – The Ontario Reign earned their third straight victory at Valley View Casino Center tonight against the San Diego Gulls with a final score of 1-0. Ontario’s goalie Cal Petersen, who started in the net for the Reign, also earned his first victory of the season too.
The Reign took the ice in San Diego and had their most aggressive opening stanza to-date. The Reign took a total of 14 shots on goal and limited the Gulls to just three of their own. Ontario’s Philippe Maillet helped the Reign take an early lead on a two-man power play advantage (8:02). Maillet’s goal had some help from T.J. Hensick and Jonny Brodzinski. In true rival fashion, Andrew Crescenzi and the Gulls’ Steve Oleksy threw the gloves off and went to battle, resulting in five minute fighting penalties each way.
A scoreless second period for both teams. The Reign again continued their heavy shooting ways taking a total of 16 shots on goal. The Gulls, on the other hand, made goalie Cal Petersen earn his paycheck by shooting at him 14 times themselves.
After the third marker in the game, the Reign held tight to their 1-0 lead. Ontario totaled 42 shots on goal while the Gulls took 27 overall. In San Diego’s defense, the Gulls set a new record for saves in a game with 41 after the final horn. The Reign finished the contest 1/4 in power plays and held San Diego 0/3.
