Reign Fight Through Downpour; Grab Point in Overtime Loss in Outdoor ClassicJan 7, 2017
Bakersfield, CA – On a rainy night at Bakersfield College Memorial Stadium, the Ontario Reign (17-6-6-0) fell to the Bakersfield Condors (12-12-4-1) 3-2 in overtime in the 2017 AHL Outdoor Classic. The overtime setback snapped the Reign’s season-high six-game winning streak (6-0-1-0).
The two teams battled through rain throughout the opening period before turning back into the locker room with 4:53 remaining due to a glass malfunction. The Condors raced out to an early shot advantage and grabbed the game’s opening power play, but netminder Jack Campbell (OTL, 30 saves 33 shots) settled into the contest early to deny all five Condors opportunities.
Shortly after the break, Reign forward Brett Sutter opened the scoring at 18:43 of the first period with his 110th professional goal in his 700th professional game. Defenseman Zac Leslie and forward Mike Amadio added assists. Following a brief break, forward Justin Auger made it 2-0 with a snapshot over the glove of Condors goaltender Laurent Brossoit (W, 24 saves on 26 shots) 34 seconds into the frame.
The Condors stormed back in the third period with two tallies to force overtime. Defenseman Mark Fayne snuck a shot through traffic and between the legs of Campbell at 1:21. Pressuring the rest of the frame, forward Josh Currie buried the game-tying tally at 17:43 flipping in a backhanded shot off just off the goal line. In the extra skate, Reign forward Michael Mersch tried to spin off a shot, but Condors defenseman Griffin Reinhart stood in the way and led the rush down the ice for the game-winning goal 46 seconds in.
The Reign finished the contest 0-for-2 on the power play while the Condors went 0-for-3.
