Tucson, AZ – The Ontario Reign (3-2-3-0) peppered the Tucson Roadrunners (6-1-1-0) with a season-high 52 shots on goal, but fell in a back-and-forth affair, 5-4 in overtime, at Tucson Arena Saturday evening.
The Reign opened the scoring early in the first period with two tallies 16 seconds apart. Forward Andrew Crescenzi banked a shot off a Roadrunners defenseman and under goaltender Adin Hill (W, 48 saves on 52 shots) at 2:43. Defenseman Zac Leslie and forward Paul Bissonnette added assists. Off the following faceoff, forward T.J. Hensick deflected in a shot from defenseman Kurtis MacDermid for the two-goal advantage. The Roadrunners responded with back-to-back power play goals from Brendan Perlini (5:24 and 14:36) to make it 2-2 heading into the first intermission. Perlini caught a shot off the post from former Reign defenseman Jamie McBain for the first tally and beat Reign goaltender Anders Lindback (OTL, 22 saves on 27 shots) with a drive off the left-wing circle for his fourth goal of the season.
In the middle stanza, forward Tyler Gaudet put the Roadrunners ahead with a shorthanded goal at 1:41. Midway through, Reign defenseman Paul LaDue reset the game with this first professional goal with help from forward Michael Mersch at 12:34. Forward Michael Bunting reclaimed the lead for the home squad at 18:33 by slipping a shot through Lindback at the right-wing circle.
Forward Adrian Kempe made it 3-3 in the third period letting a Zach Trotman wrist shot bank off his legs at 13:09. In the extra session, Roadrunners defenseman Anthony DeAngelo completed a 2-on-1 rush with Craig Cunningham to seal the victory. The Reign finished the game 0-for-4 on the power play while the Roadrunners went 2-for-3.
