ONTARIO, CA – The Ontario Reign announced today that they have signed defenseman Steve Johnson to an amateur tryout contract (ATO). Johnson will wear jersey number 2 for Ontario. The Reign also announced that they have released Colton Saucerman from his PTO.
The 23-year-old Johnson (born June 27, 1994), a 6-1, 185-pound native of Excelsior, MN, just completed his senior season at the University of Minnesota where he skated in 38 games totaling 12 assists and 15 points (3-12-15). Johnson, originally drafted in the fourth round (120th overall) by Los Angeles in 2014, skated in 119 total games at Minnesota, totaling 40 points (6-34-40) and 28 penalty minutes. While at Minnesota, Johnson was part of three Big Ten regular season champion teams (2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17) and one Big Ten Tournament Championship team (2015).
Saucerman will rejoin the Manchester Monarchs (ECHL) where he has skated in 56 games over the course of the current season. Saucerman skated in one game with the Reign during his tenure.
