The Ontario Reign (13-4-2-0) completed a two-game weekend sweep of the Charlotte Checkers (11-11-0-0) Sunday evening with a 5-1 victory at Bojangles’ Coliseum.
Forward Sean Backmanand defenseman Vincent LoVerde each scored a goal and an assist.
After a physical start to the game, Reign forward Nic Dowd opened the scoring late in the first frame slipping by the defense and sending in his second goal of the season past Checkers netminder Rasmus Tirronen (L, 29 saves on 34 shots) at 16:47. LoVerde and forward Justin Auger picked up assists.
The Checkers tied the contest early in the second period as forward Sergey Tolchinsky fired a shot by Reign goaltender Peter Budaj (W, 33 saves on 34 shots) from between the faceoff circles at 2:06. Backman put the Reign back in front at 12:42 knocking in a rebound off an Adrian Kempe shot. Defenseman Kevin Gravel added the second assist. Moments later, forward Jonny Brodzinski picked up his first professional goal, lifting a rebound over the glove of Tirronen at 6:54. Forward Jordan Samuels-Thomas earned the only assist.
The third period, the Reign completed the game scoring with two more markers. Forward Ryan Horvatforced a turnover at center ice and cut down the right wing and beat Tirronen with a clean shot at 2:23 and LoVerde lit the lamp on the power play at 6:54 off a blast from the point with help from Backman and forward Michael Mersch.
The Reign finished the game 1-for-4 on the power play while the Checkers went 0-for-5.
