San Jose, CA – In the second contest of the weekend, the Ontario Reign (5-7-0-1) grabbed a road win at the SAP Center to split the weekend series against the San Jose Barracuda (6-7-0-1) 4-1. Forward Matt Luff scored twice and goalie Cal Petersen came up with 39 saves.
The Reign scored quickly against the Barracuda in their second matchup of the weekend. Ontario took a fast 1-0 lead from a tip-in play by Matt Luff (2:22) off of a Matt Roy assist. San Jose however, answered back at the 7:20 mark thanks to Jon Martin’s goal and Nick DeSimone’s feed.
No scoring in the second period for either team. Ontario was outshot by San Jose 16 to five. The Reign did, however, have a successful penalty kill within the last three minutes of play.
In the final marker tonight, the Reign turned it up on offense scoring three unanswered goals. Michael Mersch gave Ontario their second and final lead of the game (1:33) with passes from Kevin Gravel and Paul LaDue. Matt Luff added another to the scoreboard (12:10); LaDue and T.J. Hensick assisted the goal. Ontario’s last tally of the game was by Andrew Crescenzi, in his return from the Los Angeles Kings, (17:36). Cresecnzi banked an empty net shot down the ice with a nice off the wall bounce and roll in. Kevin Gravel made the prior pass to the scoring play.
