The Ontario Reign traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina for a two-game weekend series against the Charlotte Checkers for a week record of 2-0-0-0 and improved their overall record to 13-4-2-0 to remain on top of the Pacific Division and Western Conference.
The two sides opened the four-game season series Saturday evening with the Reign taking a 3-1 victory at Bojangles’ Coliseum to snap a two-game skid. Forwards Paul Bissonnette, Scott Sabourin and Michael Mersch registered goals and defenseman Kevin Gravel added two assists in the victory.
The Reign carried the momentum into Sunday afternoon’s tilt, sweeping the weekend series behind a 5-1 triumph. Defenseman Vincent LoVerde and forward Sean Backman each scored a goal and an assist, forward Jonny Brodzinski added his first professional goal and goaltender Peter Budaj grabbed his 12th win of the season making 33 saves.
Forward Ryan Horvat is tied for fourth in the AHL with six major penalties.
Forward Michael Mersch leads the AHL with 93 shots and is fifth with 12 goals.
Goaltender Peter Budaj leads the league with a 1.56 goals-against average and four shutouts, is second with a .938 save percentage and third with 12 wins and 963:52 minutes played.
Forward Valentin Zykov is tied for second among AHL rookies with two game-winning goals.
Forward Adrian Kempe is tied for 10th among first-year players with 14 points (7-7=14) and is tied for third with four power-play goals.
Defenseman Kurtis MacDermid is tied for fourth among rookies with three major penalties, stands fifth with 39 penalty minutes and is fourth with a plus-minus rating of +11.
