Winnipeg, Manitoba – Forward Valentin Zykov registered his first professional goal with 7.5 seconds remaining in overtime and goaltender Peter Budaj picked up his second shutout in three starts to launch the Ontario Reign (3-0-0-0) over the Manitoba Moose (0-2-1-1) 1-0 at MTS Centre Saturday night.
The late-game heroics cap a season-opening three-game road trip for the Reign.
Moose goaltender Connor Hellebuyck made 44 saves to keep the Reign off the scoreboard until the very end. Budaj stopped all 20 shots he faced in the shutout win.
Hellebuyck did all he could to keep the Moose in the game. He denied 18 Reign opportunities to force overtime. In the three-on-three extra session, the Reign rifled seven shots on goal and were awarded a power play when forward Joel Armia tripped defenseman Jamie McBain on the offensive rush.
With the extra attacker, forward Valentin Zykov redirected a pass from forward Kris Newbury past the right leg of Hellebuyck with 7.5 seconds left in overtime for his first professional goal. Defenseman Vincent LoVerde added the second assist.
The Reign finished the game 1-for-4 on the power play while the Moose went 0-for-4.
