Reign Earn Point in 4-3 Overtime Loss to Eagles
Derek Couture Scores Twice
Ontario, Calif. – The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, lost to the Colorado Eagles 4-3 in overtime before 5,203 at Citizens Business Bank Arena Saturday Night.
The teams made it through most of the first period before Derek Couture, playing in his 348th professional game, fronted Ontario a 1-0 lead at 15:34. Couture crashed the paint in pursuit of a rebound and battled until the he lit the lamp. The veteran right winger slammed home his second goal at 19:31, as C.J. Stretch wheeled around the back of the Colorado net and fed Couture for the one-timer.
Colorado defenseman, Jon Landry, cut the Ontario lead to 2-1 at 4:41 of the second period before Dylan Yeo went end-to-end to score the Reign’s first short-handed goal of the season at 9:36. Yeo neutralized a Colorado threat in the Ontario zone, outskated two Eagles defenders and wristed a shot over Kyle Jones’ blocker to re-establish the Reign’s two goal lead, 3-1.
Colorado’s power play came to life in the third period, as Aaron Schneekloth’s goal at 3:19 pulled the Eagles within one and Aaron Slattengren’s goal at 8:33 tied the game at three. The match went into overtime and Slattengren came through again with the game-winner at 2:47.
Jones stopped 34 shots to earn the win, while Jean-Sebastian Berube notched a tie with 23 saves.
