Reign Lose Second Straight to Eagles, 3-1
Special teams put to work in Colorado
LOVELAND, CO. - The Ontario Reign (41-21-5-3), proud affiliate of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, were again defeated by the Colorado Eagles (37-27-1-5) Wednesday night at the Budwieser Events Center before 5,289. The Reign finish the season 5-4-2-0 against the Eagles.
Ontario started off the first frame strongly putting several shots on Colorado's Kyle Jones. The Reign were on the penalty-kill just one minute into play for a high-sticking call against Jason Beeman. The two teams traded off trips to the box, but neither converted the man-advantage. Colorado took control in the latter half of the period outshooting Ontario, 16 to eight.
The second period unleashed very physical play from both teams. Ontario benefitted from one of their six power-play opportunities when Vincent LoVerde fired a hard shot from the right face-off circle past Jones to earn his fifth goal of the season. Kyle Kraemer and Beeman picked up the assists. Three major fights broke out with a combined total of 62 infraction minutes being given in the second period alone.
Colorado took control of the third period with three unanswered goals. The first came at 8:32 from Kevin Ulanski, assisted by Joey Sides and Aaron Schneekloth. Schneekloth took advantage of the Eagles’ only power play of the frame and got one past J.F. Berube giving Colorado their first lead of the game at 12:10. While the Reign had the puck in the Eagles end, Ulanski managed to get hold of it and brought it into the Ontario zone on a breakaway and scored through the five-hole.
Of the combined 14 power-play chances, nine for Ontario, five for Colorado, each team was only able to convert one apiece throughout the contest.
Berube took the loss stopping 22 of 25 shots and Jones got the win stopping all but one of Ontario’s 25 shots.
1) COL - K. Ulanski
2) COL - K. Jones
3) COL - A. Schneekloth
