King relishes Stanley Cup title

King relishes Stanley Cup title
By MIKE ASHMORE, ECHL.com

LOS ANGELES -- According to the National Hockey League, the Stanley Cup weighs 34 and a half pounds.  Ask Dwight King on the ice just minutes after he got to pick it up, however, and he'll give you a bit of a different estimate.

"Your emotions are so high from the game, and to get that Cup and lift it over your head, it feels like it's zero pounds," King told ECHL.com.

"It's surreal."

The reality is, the 22-year-old forward began his career in the ECHL with the Ontario Reign, for whom he played in 20 games during the 2009-10 season.  However, it's safe to say he made far more of an impact during the 20 postseason contests he played in for Los Angeles this year, with two of his five goals serving as game-winners during the Kings' championship run.

A fourth round draft choice by Los Angeles in 2007, King made his NHL debut last season, but finally stuck at the game's top level this year following a February call-up from AHL Manchester.   But even back when he was with Ontario, he says he allowed himself to think about the very moment that will lead to his name getting etched into the very trophy he just held over his head.

"You never quit the dream," King said.

"You start when you're young, and now you win one and you want more.  We're really going to enjoy this one.  Everyone put a lot of effort to get here, and it's great to finally achieve it.  It's awesome.  To put in that much work through a whole lifetime to get here, it's awesome.  Even just to be in the NHL and in the playoffs, it's all been awesome."
