Brodzinski Scores Twice in 2016-17 Regular-Season Finale

San Diego, CA – Forward Jonny Brodzinski scored twice and forward Michael Mersch added two assists, but the Ontario Reign (36-21-10-1) fell to the San Diego Gulls (43-20-3-2) 5-3 at Valley View Casino Center Saturday evening.

Game Summary

Gulls forward Kevin Roy opened the scoring midway through the first period, slapping a rolling puck past Reign netminder Jack Campbell (L, 28 saves on 33 shots) off the right-wing circle at 13:16. The Reign responded on the power play moments later as forward Jonny Brodzinski deflected a drive from defenseman Cameron Schilling past goalie Jhonas Enroth (W, 19 saves on 22 shots) at 15:08.  

The Gulls reclaimed the lead at 10:44 of the middle stanza with a backhanded tally from forward Ondrej Kase on the power play. At 13:51, Reign defenseman Zac Leslie capitalized on a misplay from Enroth to slide in his fifth goal of the season with help from forwards Michael Mersch and Matt Luff. For Luff, the assist was his first professional point. Late in the period, the Gulls jumped back in front for the third time when Zac Larraza guided in a rebound past the right pad of Campbell at 18:40.

Brodzinski made it 3-3 on the man advantage at 8:44 of the third period with his team-leading 27 goal of the season and his second of the game. Half a minute later, defenseman Brian Cooper put the Gulls up for good. Forward Austin Ortega added an insurance marker on the power play at 14:08. The Reign finished the game 2-for-6 on the power play while the Gulls went 2-for-5.
