Reign Clinch Playoff Berth Behind Campbell’s 30-Save Shutout of Gulls

San Diego, CA – Goaltender Jack Campbell stopped all 30 shots faced as Ontario Reign (34-19-10-0) shutout the San Diego Gulls (40-19-3-2), 4-0, at Valley View Casino Center Friday evening. With the victory and a Bakersfield Condors loss in San Antonio, the Reign clinched a berth in the 2017 Calder Cup Playoffs.

Reign forward Sam Herr opened the scoring late in the first period, deflecting in his eighth goal of the season between the legs of Gulls netminder Jhonas Enroth (L, 28 saves on 31 shots) at 14:38. Defenseman Alexx Privitera and forward Patrick Bjorkstrand earned assists.

In the second period, the Reign seized momentum with back-to-back power-play goals to go up 3-0. With Gulls defenseman Nate Guenin in the box on a double minor high-sticking call, Reign captain Vincent LoVerde made it a two-goal advantage at 5:57 from forwards Teddy Purcell and T.J. Hensick. Less than a minute later, forward Mike Amadio buried his own rebound for his 13 goal of the season at 6:30 with help from Philippe Maillet.

Amadio sealed the victory with an empty-net goal at 13:07 of the third period. Purcell picked up the lone assist. The Reign finished the contest 2-for-7 on the power play. The Gulls went 0-for-3.
